Club Map Reference - Frequently Asked Questions

You can specify a Map Reference or PostCode for your Club. This allows your club and your clubs activities to be searched for by Post Code.

Q. What Formats can an Club Map Reference be in?
A. There are three which are Post Code, Grid Reference and Eastings and Northings.

Q. What is the Post Code format?
A. This is the first part of a Post Code as in "B30" for the Post Code "B30 3EE". It does not matter if you supply the full Post Code but if you do the two parts should be separated by a space as otherwise you will lose accuracy. Only the first part is significant.

Q. What is the Grid Reference format?
A. This is in the form "SP04777975" where the first two letters represent a 100Km square and the remaining digits are the co-ordinates within that square. This format is sometimes known as an NGR (National Grid Reference). The number of digits define the accuracy and there must always be an even number. The first half of the digits represent the Easting or the X-axis and the second half represent the Northing or the Y-axis. The advantage of Grid References is that the place does not need to have a Post Code and you can be as accurate as you want. The disadvantage is that you need to understand a bit more to use them.

Q. What is the Eastings and Northings format?
A. This specifies the grid reference but as two numbers separated by a space as in "404770 279750". This format is only useful if you start out with Easting and Northing numbers and you don't want to convert them to a Grid Reference in the above format.

Q. How does Activity Exchange know the format?
A. If the Map Reference is a single word that starts with a valid 2 letter identifier and the rest of the Map Reference is all digits and is an even number of digits then Activity Exchange assumes it is a Grid Ref. If the Map Reference consists of two words both of which are all digits then Activity Exchange assumes it is an Easting/Northing. Anything else is treated as a Post Code.

Q. What happens if no Map Reference is supplied?
A. If there is no Map Reference then Activity Exchange will use the PostCode of the postal address of the club. This might not be at the centre of your target area and so could lead to inaccuracies. If you have not supplied either a PostCode or a Map Reference then visitors to the site will not be able to search for your club by PostCode or your clubs activities by Postcode unless they have their own MapRef.
